Freeview is New Zealand's digital terrestrial television platform. It is operated by a joint venture between the country's major free-to-air broadcasters – government-owned Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand, government-subsidised Māori Television, and the Australian-owned MediaWorks New Zealand (operators of Three, Bravo and The Edge TV).

What’s New

Say hello to the new Freeview TV Guide app.
Introducing a sleek design and a better way of setting and managing reminders. Same features but with the added bonuses of: browse by genre and detailed show pages.
We also squashed bugs during the revamp of the app.

Good but needs more

Update:
This app still does not allow for downloading and storing data for offline viewing!
Also needs the ability to either zoom in as some shorter progs are just two parallel lines. You cannot tell what the prog title is.
Being able to select a channel listed on the left side which then shows a text version of the lineup would help as well.
Shows the relevant data but long titles do get shorten so you cant make out what its saying. You can tap on the programme to see more as well as adding an alarm to the ipad calendar.
One thing that it needs is the ability to save data for offline viewing

Not sure why others have low-balled the ratings?

App works as expected: like the paper TV guide. Would be good if push notifications remained on phone after phone is unlocked as occasionally I miss them.
Would also be a good idea when searching for a program to be able to see multiple listings in future, rather than just “next airing”.
Very occasionally bugs out and doesn’t load, but just force close app and relaunch and it’s fine.
Would be good to “delete” or “favourite” channels as I don’t watch half the Freeview channels (and have deleted them from my tv anyway).

Great App

First time having this App was a drama as I was on a different WiFi plan and so couldn’t pick up the guide well being out in the lounge so I deleted it. Since then I have got faster better Internet plan and range must be good cause I can get the guide with no problems and am able to book program viewing and this works with my calendar. Alarm reminds me on my iPhone when programming is about to start. Love the layout of this Freeview App they have designed it well. Happy I can now see what is on for the week and don’t miss my favourite shows.

New Zealand broadcast channels[edit]

Notes
  • The PAL-B&G (analogue) television switch off was completed on 1 December 2013.[1] AM and FM radio is unaffected.
  • DVB64-QAM terrestrial channels use ITU system G channel allocations within UHF television band IV and band V. On 1 December 2013, Band V above 698 MHz was reallocated to LTE mobile telephony, hence some channels that were broadcasting on Band V above 698 MHz on 30 November 2013 have been forced off air until a new frequency is allocated.
  • All digital terrestrial television channels are encoded in H.264 and subject to a MPEG-LA controlled transmission patent licensing tax which is in included in the Freeview broadcaster cost and varies on viewership figures.
  • High-definition 1080iDVB64-QAM are only available on TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Three and Māori Television. All other TV channels are standard-definition 576ianamorphic widescreen.
  • Metro means Kordia owned sites only in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier/Hastings, Palmerston North, the Wellington metropolitan area (including Kapiti), Christchurch and Dunedin.
  • A grey box in the 64-QAM column means the channel(s) is temporarily off-air.
  • All New Zealand operated direct-broadcast satellite channels are from Optus D1 at 160.0°E, and can be received via a standard 60 cm parabolic antenna. There are two main up-links - the original one from Sky in Auckland, on transports 3 @ 12519 MHz, 5 @ 12644 MHz or 6 @ 12671 MHz and the one from TVNZ's Avalon comm hub in Lower Hutt, with channels broadcast on either Freeview transport 21 @ 12456 MHz or 22 @ 12483 MHz.
  • IPTV resolution is generally better than 576i due to not being scaled to an anamorphic widescreen width of 720, but may be lower depending on the bandwidth selected or calculated at the time of connection. Playback performance may vary with network traffic conditions. Most metropolitan New Zealanders have access to fiber broadband.

Foreign satellite channels[edit]

The following is a list of free-to-airDVB satellite services[6] available in New Zealand. Most New Zealand homes already have a standard 60 cm satellite dish fitted which can pick up most of these channels, as these are also used (or have been used in the past) to pick up free-to-air and pay New Zealand television channels from Optus D1 (and historically, Optus B1). A frequency scanning (aka blind-scan) capable set-top box can be used to locate other services.
